It’s the New Year, and you’ve probably already made a list of resolutions that you’re hoping to achieve during 2019. In an attempt to improve your health, included in your list might be some rather generic things such as eating healthier, adding more hours to your sleep each night, or exercising more. However, if you’ve been struggling with chronic pain, your resolutions will have to be much more specific. You want to focus on things that will create long-term changes. To give you some ideas, here are five goals that you can set for yourself during the New Year for a better and healthier you!
Meet With Your Chiropractor
If you have been experiencing pain in your back, neck, or joint for a while now, then maybe it’s time that you finally decide to do something about it. Schedule an appointment with your chiropractor so that they can help you manage your symptoms. By discussing your condition with your chiropractor, you will know which treatment or which combination of treatments is the most suitable for you. Your chiropractor may suggest that you get acupuncture, massage therapy, muscle stimulation, or therapeutic exercises. In the end, your symptoms will improve, and it will make you wonder why you didn’t go to visit your chiropractor sooner!
Add Stretching, Muscle Strengthening, and Yoga to Your Routine
One of the most effective ways to prevent the body from injury is by stretching. Stretching is especially necessary for when you’re about to engage in physical activities, such as moving boxes around, cleaning the house, or shoveling snow. In addition to stretching, you should also add strength training exercises and yoga to your routine to improve your stress levels as well as your body’s overall function.
Cut Out Inflammatory Foods
Inflammatory foods are bad for everyone, but they are incredibly terrible for people with body pain. You should steer clear of processed foods and junk foods when you’re suffering from body pain. For the New Year, make sure that you cut these kinds of foods out of your diet, and opt for whole foods instead.
Start a Pain Journal
Another thing that you should set out to do is to keep a pain journal. This can be very useful for identifying the source of your pain. Whenever you’re feeling pain, write down the details including the date, time, symptoms, and the activity that caused the feeling. For example, if you felt the pain coming on after you just treated yourself with a Big Mac, don’t forget to write it down. If you do this regularly, you will be able to notice a pattern, and you will know what activities or what kinds of foods you should stay away from. It is also a good idea to bring your pain journal to your chiropractor for your next appointment.
Set a Workout Routine
This cannot be stressed enough, but exercise is very important to your overall well-being. Stop making excuses and telling yourself that you’re too busy to exercise. To get yourself into the routine, start off small with 30 minutes of exercise three times a week. Once you’re ready for more, you can increase to four or even five days of exercise per week! Be careful not to push yourself too hard or set unrealistic goals, or else you will find yourself wanting to give up when you’ve barely started.
