Shoulder tendonitis is something that affects a lot of sports people, and that is becoming increasingly commonplace in sedentary people too because of the kind of desk-based jobs that so many of us do. Shoulder pain relief does not have to elude us, as great care is readily available.

Shoulder tendonitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the tendons around the shoulder and rotator cuff. It tends to occur because of repeated micro traumas to the rotator cuff tendons, rather than because of a specific traumatic event.

Causes of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder tendonitis can be caused by a shoulder injury such as:

– Repetitive motion
– Over use, such as tennis or golf
– Trauma such as a car accident (in an auto accident hitting your shoulder against the door)
– Degenerative joint diseases such as arthritis
– Ice skating injuries
Carpal tunnel syndrome
– Diabetes, leading to adhesive capsulitis, sometimes refered to as a “frozen shoulder”
– Sports injuries
– Overhead work, such as a mechanic, which may include pain that is both acute and chronic
– Neck pain
– Elbow issues
– Pinched nerves
– Spinal stenosis

Symptoms of Shoulder Tendonitis

The condition presents itself differently in different people, but there are some common symptoms: shoulder pain

– Clicking of the shoulder when the arm is raised to around shoulder help
– A ‘painful arc’ when the arm is raised
– Shoulder pain or clicking when the arm is moved behind your back or your head
– Upper arm pain
– Pain in the shoulder even when the arm is at rest
Neck pain
Rotator cuff tear

Usually, it is possible to diagnose shoulder tendonitis via discussion of the symptoms and via physical examination. In some cases, a doctor may recommend an ultrasound to determine whether there are other issues affecting the joint, such as bursitis. A MRI may also be ordered to determine if there have been any rotator cuff tears. An x-ray may be ordered as well, but this will not actually confirm tendonitis, rather, it would show if there was some other issue such as a bone spur encroaching into the subacromial space creating an impingement syndrome or avulsion fractures.

Treatment for Tendonitis

tendinitisTendonitis can usually be managed with physical therapy, rest, anti-inflammatory treatments, and remedial treatment to put the shoulder back into the correct position and to improve your posture. It is becoming increasingly common for people to seek chiropractic treatment for such injuries, because a good Charlotte chiropractor can offer a combination of adjustments to help with posture (and at the Charlotte NC chiropractic center of Tebby Chiropractic and Sports Medicine Clinic, we offer this type of pain managements. You can always call the clinic and meet the doctors to discuss chronic pain and pain treatment). Treating the postural issues that contribute to the pain is important for preventing the pain from coming back.

Evidence Based Care

Chiropractic care is non-invasive, and it can be a powerful way of reducing pain and inflammation. There are some people who are skeptical about chiropractors because of the old-school philosophy of adjustments and regular maintenance that dominated the sector a decade or so ago. Modern chiropractors have an understanding of the spine, and an understanding of modern evidence based practices, and can combine that knowledge to provide high quality care. They know how posture can affect your extremities such as shoulder joints, and how improving spinal alignment, core strength and posture can help to reduce musculoskeletal disorders or prevent pain in other areas.

It can take several treatments to see improvement in shoulder pain and pain relief, because the inflammation needs time to go down, and you will need to strengthen the surrounding muscles and recover your range of motion. If there is scar tissue in the area, it will need time to break down as well. With patience and consistent compliance to a treatment plan with physical therapy exercises, though, it is possible to recover from shoulder tendonitis. If you suspect that your issue was caused by repetitive strain then take measures to rectify that before starting treatment. If it is a sports related injury, then be sure to rest, so that you can make a full recovery and avoid chronic problems with your shoulder, thereby insuring improved sports performance and healthy living.
